Elaine de Kooning
TORCHLIGHT CAVE PAINTINGS, 1985
Portfolio of eight aquatints
20 x 26-1/4", edition 25

A new semester starts Monday, so like Elaine de Kooning we will begin by going back in time. (heres a story: at a dinner party in Long Island I was seated next to Elaine, I was so star struck that I stared at her face the whole time, to this day I could make a print of exactly what her beautiful face looked like that night click the title post to see more etchings)
Step back into time and visit other first days in the
Shop of Sweat Blood Tears and Love.

I dare you to visit these first days past:

9/01/07 1/20/2007 9/03/2006 1/22/2006 9/03/2006

I dare you experienced printfools to describe what the new babies will experience...

I can't believe it's time to go back already! Yet at the same time, it seems like it's been a lot longer than 5 weeks or whatever it was. I love de Kooning's aquatints-I was awestruck at the range of values and various textures. And going primitive with the cave painting imagery is a really cool idea.
Can't wait to see everyone tomorrow!!

Meagan said...

I really like the range of textures too. I'm trying to figure out how she did it, maybe flicking on varnish with a toothbrush? well whatever she used it has a nice effect

AHHH, sooo excited to be back! Did de Kooning use a sugar lift to create the texture?? I saw Nels getting some treat ingredients at Festival this afternoon and he has motivated me to create a back up print mix tomorrow in case Becca doesn't bring one!
Get ready for the time of your new babies!!!

so appropriate that the first post ever was Mauricio Lasansky... although there was only one comment made! Oh how the blog has grown!

ps. Spell check on first comment... get ready for the time of your LIFE new babies!

Hello Everyone and Welcome Back! I have missed everyone and the shop dearly.

I love de Kooning's Cave series. I love the simplicity of her lines and values.

It was fun to go back and look at the old postings on the blog. I especially enjoyed the solaces of our chapel, to which we are all members. I made a couple notes about the 9/3/06 solaces: #1 - A must for fuck's sake...#8 - Not enough Y chromosomes in the shop to be a real problem...and #18 - When followed, makes everyone happy and peaceful! ;D Love to ALL!

Oh yeah, and the Babies really should be shaking in their boots...

I am so excited to be able to be there for the New Babies first day. I think I will be able to relate to the fears that they are going through since I was just a baby myself. I cannot believe I am now an adolencent.

I wish all the new babies good luck, and feel free to ask me questions. I might not know everything, but I will try and find an answer!

A very happy hello and welcome to all in this beautiful new year!

I am so very happy that school is starting again -- not for the homework but to see everyone and start printing!!

I feel like this is going to be another amazing semester -- I am a little sad to say that I am not a baby anymore -- but can't wait to see all the new baby faces!

Get a good night sleep cuz tomorrow your socks are going to be knocked off!!

I DO NOT MISS being a baby! (well maybe a little ;-D) I am uber excited to see the effects of adolescence and color!

Babies Beware. Printing is a disease- a disease that feeds of of artistic energy, collaboration, hard work, physical punishment, sarcasm, music, dance, and frustration.

Side effects include:
Being a smart ass
Hitting
Swearing
Sweating
friendship
sufferers may experience an addiction to printing
Bleeding

Rejoice Rejoice!!! Welcome babies!

What a good first day this was!!! Great to see everyone and get the semester started. Boy there's gonna be some sweaty people in the shop!!!

These prints are beautiful. The forms are very simple, but the entire image is so much more! They seem magical in a way. It's almost like I'm looking at them right in the cave! Very cool. I can see why you were starstruck Joel!

Well babies, I have to say, you will ALMOST have the time of your life-however you will never know me....and well, I think everyone else can testify how much better that class was with THREE erin's in it. BUT, there are three things you can do:
-Drink lots of coffee
-Learn the print dance
-Never stop hitting Elgin. No matter what he threatens.

Wish you all a very successful semester, and if anyone wants to make a print of my face and put it on the wall, I give you my permission.

I miss you all my sisters and brother Nels!

I really feel out of the loop when it comes to all of the wonderful things that go on in the print shop, mainly the "print dance" lol

NicholMarieShame said...

The print dance is the most amazing dance ever created! But it is a secret dance only to be danced by printmakers... Serious printmakers... printing fools!

No Name said...

I am going to miss the print dance as well. Nichol, you should email me the song if you ever figure out what it's called, or if you already have figured it out. Then I can do it in my room when no one is watching. Dont want any of these bio/chem majors i live with catching on...they simply wouldn't understand. they don't have the ink in their veins.

i am terribly late but am none-the-less excited for a semester of blood, sweat, and tears! see you all in the next week!

mao said...

I'm a bit late too, but late is better than never.

These prints are simple and beautiful. I love the lines and even the values from it.

I'm a bit nervous to start color intaglio, but excited as well.

At the expense of being repetitive, it is good to be back in the print shop. I have missed it. de Kooking's work is great. I think Danil said it all with her choice to work with the idea of cave painting.

I've gotta say, the first few days have showed me that I have a TON to learn. I'm excited to get learn a lot in the shop of love and sweat. See you all Tuesday!

What an awesome thing to work into printmaking. I'm trying to figure out some really cool way to make the transition from cave painting to printmaking, but can't come up with it. BPJ is yelling at me to get off the computer so gotta go.
